The Castine Volunteer Fire Department is responsible for the protection of between 800 and 1200 people. The number of residents fluctuates with the summer tourist season and the Maine Maritime Academy academic schedule. The Department responds to many types of calls with the number varying between 30-50 non-EMS calls per year. The calls listed here are the primary types:
1. Any report of fire or possible fire of any kind;
2. Any report of smoke in a building, smoke coming from a building, or an
area, or unusual amounts of smoke coming from a chimney, etc.
This includes reports of unusual odors in a building;
3. Any problems with sprinkler systems, particularly if the alarm is
sounding or if water is flowing;
4. Gas leaks of any kind: LP, chlorine, etc.;
5. Fuel spills of any kind gasoline, oil, diesel, etc.;
6. Incidents involving ANY hazardous or chemical materials, other than
bombs;
7. Wires down and incidents involving damage to utility poles;
8. Motor vehicle accidents involving utility poles, houses, or other stationary objects or
property;
9. ANY motor vehicle accident, irregardless of injury;
10. All alarm panel fire alarms;
11. All fire alarms at the Maine Maritime Academy; and
12. Medical assistance, when requested.
